His latest project “Picking Up the Pieces” reflects on his expansive career, offering a musical conversation that bridges his past and present as he navigates the uncertainty of a new life in the United States.
“Throughout my life as an artist, I have had numerous sources of inspiration. Rooted in Cuban and Afro-Cuban rhythms, my compositions evolve within a fusion framework rather than traditional confines. While living in the South of France, I immersed myself in the vibrant strains of Spanish gypsy music, incorporating traditional chords into my pieces like "Vicente’s Song." I also encountered North African music from Algeria, which sparked my explorations of 6/8 rhythm, featured in my composition “On the Roof.” In recent years, I have incorporated elements of Rag Time to interpret contemporary Cuban music, written at the beginning of 20th-century compositions. This work inspired me to compose "Contradanzas."
Overall, I blend past influences with present endeavors, exemplified by my "Elements," inspired by the visceral rhythms of percussionists."
